MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION SESSION

NHS Members enjoy affiliation with one of the most prestigious and internationally recognized organizations open to high school students Colleges, Scholarships and Employers all know and respect NHS membership as a testament of your accomplishment and qualities Members must maintain the qualities that earned them membership (such as GPA)

NHS at OHCHS The OHCHS Chapter of NHS is about more than recognition, it is about service. Provide in-school tutoring Sponsor community projects (Spring of 2008: Major event at the Cafe Nomad raising awareness about human rights violations in Burma) Work with Norway Rehab Attend regular monthly meetings Clean an “adopt-a-space”

NHS Process National Honor Society membership recognizes high levels of achievement in Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Character. At OHCHS, a 10th-12th grade student must maintain a GPA of a 90 (3.33) in order to meet the Scholarship eligibility requirement. The remaining three criteria of Leadership, Service and Character are addressed in the NHS membership form.

NHS Process Fully completed membership forms are reviewed by a Faculty Council, and they grant membership based on the forms. The Advisor, Mr. Long, is a non-voting facilitator during this process. Decisions are based on information in the form, not word of mouth. TAKE THE FORM SERIOUSLY!

NHS FORM COCURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:
List all school related activities in which you have participated during high school. Include clubs, teams, musical groups, fundraisers…. Also include accomplishments in each (awards, honors, positions). ACTIVITIES ACCOMPLISHMENTS _________ __ __ __ __ ______________

NHS FORM LEADERSHIP POSITIONS:
List all leadership positions held in school, community, or work activities. Only those positions in which you were directly responsible for motivating others should be included. LEADERSHIP ACTIVITY __________ __ __ __ __ _______________

NHS FORM COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS:
List community service projects in which you have participated and note any major accomplishments in each. These should be any activities outside of school in which you participated for the betterment of the community of which you DID NOT GET PAID FOR. NHS FORMS RECOGNITIONS AND AWARDS:

FAQ Q: Can I put the same thing in more than one category?

FAQ Q: What is the deadline? A: Thursday, March 4th, 2010
Q: What if I am not granted membership this year? A: You will be eligible every year so long as you hold a GPA above a 90. * You will receive a letter explaining the recommendations of the Faculty Council to help you see where you can improve your candidacy.

NHS Induction If membership is granted, members are inducted at a formal event in late March. Members then must maintain their high levels of achievement and accomplishment regarding Scholarship, Character, Leadership and Community Service Members are honored at graduation, and throughout life, as members of the National Honor Society
