1 The Sentence Completion Test
Projective tests - personality tests like the Rorschach or TAT – are not designed for classroom use or for people who are not suspected of psychological disorders However, Gardner (1980) presented an analog to the Rotter Incomplete Sentences Blank that can be used in a class to provide general feedback on a person’s outlook on life – the sentence completion test.

2 Scoring is subjective; evaluate each sentence as P, C, or N, according to the directions Gardener provided: P: If your response indicates a positive, humorous, or hopeful attitude C: If your response indicates conflict, antagonism, pessimism, or emotional disturbance N: If your response is neutral; i.e., not clearly positive or conflictive

3 The following example shows how a response might be scored:
Boys ________________ P: are friendly, are easy to get along with, are nice, are good at sports, are considerate, are fun at a party, are good friends, are OK, etc. C: are a pain in the neck, get on my nerves, can’t be trusted, bother me, give me a headache, think they are superior, are rude, are stupid, etc. N: are human beings, are taller than girls, are stronger than girls, etc.

4 Take your P score and subtract your C score to get an overall score for the test:
A score above 0 indicates a generally positive outlook on life; life is viewed optimistically. A score below 0 indicates a somewhat negative outlook on life and a pessimistic view. A score of 0 indicates that the individual has neither a positive nor a negative outlook on life.

5 Questions On Separate Sheet of Binder Paper
1) What type of personality test is this? Explain. 2) What are the two other tests of this type that we talked about in class? 3) Which item(s) was the most difficult to answer? Why? 4) Does your score correspond to your own assessment of your outlook on life? Give an example from your life to support your answer.
