Introduction Inside Out and Back Again is the novel of a little girl and her family being forced to flee their home in Saigon, South Vietnam at the end of the Vietnam War Refugees face all sorts of challenges in the transition from their original homes to their new homes…what do these challenges entail? You will be going on a WebQuest to examine the parallels between Ha’s story and what actually took place as Saigon fell to the North Vietnamese

Task Visit https://sites.google.com/a/oswego.edu/lubba/
You will be visiting various websites relevant to the Vietnam War, and you will reflect on how these websites reflect the events of the novel. Answer the questions on the Reflection Guide; they will prompt you to make connections between the events of the novel and actual historical events. You will be looking for connections between various poems from your assigned readings and the sites that you are visiting. Keep in mind the novel is historical fiction; we have fictional characters living in a historical, real environment. Many of the events and issues presented in the poems actually occurred in Saigon near the end of the Vietnam War. Using your WebQuest handout, look for connections between specific poems and the specific websites I'm having you visit. Reflect on how Ha is responding to these real-life events.

Evaluation All 3 of your Reflection Guides will be collected for a Homework grade. Thoughtful, thorough answers will receive better grades as opposed to Reflection Guides with incomplete sentences. Effort and focus will always be factored into final grades…your grade is partially dependent on how responsible you were with the iPads.

Conclusion At this point, you should recognize some of the parallels between Ha’s experiences and what actually occurred in Saigon in 1975. Hopefully you understand what many refugees experience when fleeing their homes in times of great peril. Use what you know about the average Vietnamese refugee’s experience to predict how the rest of Ha’s story will unfold.
