The following presentation consists of facts consistent with Rome during the time of the Pax Romana (Roman Peace) that lasted for about 200 years!

Was the Roman Empire secure (safe from threats, both from within the empire and from the outside)?
While on this virtual field trip, you are going to build a 5-paragraph essay on whether or not the Romans experienced a golden age. If you answer the inquiry questions at the right, and use that information to build your body paragraphs, you should have no trouble answering the essay question: “Did Rome experience a golden age during the Pax Romana?”

Was the Roman Empire secure?
Organization

The Roman army was a well- organized entity
The Army was broken down into legions, centuries, and cohorts, and included things like messengers, scouts and medics
Battle Tactics
Much of the Roman army’s success comes from it’s use of battle tactics, such as the tortoise, where soldiers would line up and inter-lock their shields to defend against enemy archers
The Roman Empire
The Roman army used superior tactics, training and technology to conquer a vast area of land surrounding the Mediterranean Sea
The Army was able to maintain safety within the empire’s borders for hundreds of years!

The Romans also used columns to help distribute the weight of heavy beams and ceilings.
Roman Arch
Roman architecture was greatly inspired by Greek architecture. The Romans added new features, such as the arch, that allowed them to build monumental structures
Roman columns were a combination of different earlier styles of columns, and also served as decorative elements

The city of Rome gave birth to a plethora of authors, such as Virgil, Horace and Ovid

These authors created works of fiction (poetry & drama), non-fiction (history texts) and political & social critiques (satire)

Ancient Rome produced many great literary works
Romans enjoyed poetry, drama, comedy and satire

The 12 Tables
When Justinian I wrote the famous Justinian Code, he and the Byzantine rulers based many of their laws on the 12 Tables of Rome
Much of the international law that is in place today is based on the Justinian Code
The Romans wrote their laws down on a series of tablets called the 12 Tables
This way, everyone could read them and know what they were.
Some of our current judicial ideas, such as “innocent until proven guilty”, come from the 12 Tables

Roman engineers built this transportation network to move people, goods, and soldiers across the vast empire rapidly.
Because of their road system, Rome was able to experience a long period of stable government
