Middle Ages, 1 Middle Ages- The period in European history between the collapse of Rome and the Renaissance. 476 CE to about also called the Dark Ages.

Middle Ages, 2 During the Middle Ages, European artists painted in a way that emphasized religious images and symbolism rather than realism. Most paintings depicted scenes of holy figures and people important in the Christian religion.

Art was about glorifying God and those who served His will.
Middle Ages, 3 Even the most talented painters of the Middle Ages paid little attention to making humans and animals look lifelike. Art was about glorifying God and those who served His will. Art rejected man as important but instead glorified the soul and the afterlife.

Middle Ages, 4 It was as much about converting non-believers as it was reminding the lower class who was in charge. There were primarily three different social levels: the nobility, the church/clergy, and the peasants.
