Middle Ages- The period in European history between the collapse of Rome and the Renaissance.
476 CE to about also called the Dark Ages.

During the Middle Ages, European artists painted in a way that emphasized religious images and symbolism rather than realism.
Most paintings depicted scenes of holy figures and people important in the Christian religion.

It was as much about converting non-believers as it was reminding the lower class who was in charge.
There were primarily three different social levels: the nobility, the church/clergy, and the peasants.
