2 What is an Apprenticeship?
A real, paid job with training Specifically tailored to help you develop the skills employers need An alternative to university Make this interactive – ask the students to give you their definition of an apprenticeship first. gov.uk/civil-service-apprenticeships Facebook.com/CSFastTrackApp Snapchat: CSFastTrack

3 What is the Civil Service?
Non-political body that helps the Government of the day to develop and deliver its policies as effectively as possible There are roughly 400,000 UK civil servants across the country and the globe 24 Ministerial Departments that deal with everything from the NHS to national security Make this interactive as well – ask the students what they think the Civil Service is, and how many Civil Servants and Departments there are. 1. The Civil Service helps the Government of the day to develop and deliver its policies as effectively as possible. 2. It incorporates three types of organisations – departments, agencies, and non-departmental government bodies (NDPBs) that work in a wide range of areas, touching on everyone’s day-to-day lives, such as education, health and policing. 3. Because our organisations deal with so many different aspects of government, civil servants work in an enormous variety of roles) There are a range of more unusual jobs…. Did you know the Civil Service employs: Child protection officers Software developers Space sensor engineers Crime Scene Investigation Trainer Vets Immigration Officers

4 Some of the departments you could be placed in
Use this slide as an opportunity to link the work of the Civil Service to the lives of the students, so that it feels relevant. Use the example of their morning routine: Lights and heating – policy relevant to DECC Eggs for breakfast – policy relevant to Defra Using the bus or other forms of public transport – policy relevant to DfT Their school building and education – policy relevant to DfE and BIS.

5 Who are Civil Servants? The Civil Service is evolving to become more diverse and more representative of the society that we serve. Civil Servants come from all walks of life, and the Civil Service is working really hard to ensure that they’re representative of society. Why is this important? So that policy can reflect the needs of everyone. What Civil Servants bring to the table from their own individual experiences is really important. You could go into detail about the underrepresented communities from whom we are trying to recruit: BAME, LGBTQ+, Lower SES and disabled candidates
