1 Creating a Windows 10 Virtual machine
Using MacOS10.12 & Vmware Fusion 8.5

What is Needed: An installation of VMware Fusion 8.5 An Disk Image File (.iso) for installing Windows 10 A computer capable of virtualization We use Windows 10 Educational for the purposes of this how-to, but the process is the same for any version of windows. If you are unsure about any of these contact either your instructor or any available T-213 Lab Technician for assistance.

3 Open Vmware Workstation
Open the latest version of VMware Fusion You can do this by clicking the icon on your Dock.

4 To begin creating a Virtual Machine
Once the VMware Fusion application is open: In the top-left corner, click the add button, then click “New…”. For the Installation Method, click the large button on the left that says “Install from disc or image”.

5 Select the Disk Image File
From here, select the appropriate disk image. If that option isn’t available, click ‘Use another disc or disc image…’ and find the .iso in your file system. Then, if the summary is correct, select Finish.

6 Microsoft Windows Easy Install
Enter your account name and password. We usually use the following: Account Name: technician Password: Password1 You can choose not to enter a product key right now, and it won’t effect the install.

7 Integration At this screen, select ‘More Isolated’. This way, your computer should be better protected in case your virtual machine becomes infected.

8 Installing Windows 10 It will show your settings. Hit finish. You can modify the settings after the machine is created.

9 Save your Virtual Machine
Next, Choose a file to save your Virtual Machine to, then hit Save, and wait for the machine to be created. This may take a few minutes.

10 Updating Windows 10 Once you come to this screen, click once to bring up the login field. Enter your chosen username (if required) and password, then hit enter.

11 Updating Windows 10 Click on the spyglass icon in the bottom left corner of the desktop, next to the Windows icon. Type “settings” and click on the result with the gear icon (it should be the first one shown). Under Settings, click on ‘Updates and Security’

12 Updating Windows 10 Make sure “Windows Update” is selected on the left, the under “Update status” select “Check for updates”. Updates may take quite a while to complete.

13 Activating Windows 10 If you didn’t activate Windows earlier, you may do so now. If you don’t yet have a key to activate it, don’t worry, you’ll have 30 days to get one. To activate Windows, right click the Windows icon in the bottom left corner, then go to “System” in the pop-up menu.

14 Activating Windows 10 In the System window, select “Activate Windows” in the bottom right corner. In the following window, select “Change product key”. You’ll be prompted for administrator approval. Select “Yes” then enter your product key in the next window.

15 Changing Hardware Requirements
Shutdown the Virtual Machine. You can do this by clicking the Windows icon, clicking the power button, then clicking “Shut down”.

Click the “Settings” button at the top middle of this screen.

17 Changing Hardware Requirements
From the Settings window, select “Processors & Memory”. Change the number of processor cores to 2 and the amount of memory to 4098 MB, providing the computer supports it. When you’re done, hit “Show All” to return to the settings menu.

18 Changing Hardware Requirements
From the Settings window, select “Hard Disk (SCSI)”. Change the disk size to GB and make sure “Split into multiple files” and “Pre-allocate disk space” are NOT selected. When you’re done, hit “Apply”, then “Show All” to return to the settings menu.

19 Changing Hardware Requirements
From the Settings window, select “Network Adapter”. Change the adapter from “Share with my Mac” to one of the ‘Bridged Networking’ choices. This will allow the virtual machine to have its own IP address. Now you’re done configuring your Windows 10 virtual machine!
