WORLD HISTORY & GEOGRAPHY – 3 Thematic Questions and 7 Themes
IS THE STORY OF THE HUMAN COMMUNITY – HOW THEY HAVE LIVED ON A DAILY BASIS

3 Thematic Questions How has the changing relationship between humans and the environment affected us? (relationships) Why have relations among humans become complex? (complexity) How have humans views of the world and nature changed? (point of view)

COMMONALITY AS YOU READ THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER, YOU WILL NOTICE COMMON ‘KEY THEMES’ THAT WILL HAPPEN REPEATEDLY ACROSS DIFFERENT TIME PERIODS AND REGIONS OF THE WORLD YOUR JOB WILL BE TO IDENTIFY THEM AND REALIZE WHY THEY HAPPENED

KEY THEME #1 CITIES (or Patterns of Population) – the number of people and their distribution around the globe, known as demography, have affected much of the planet. The migration patterns of humans also tell us the story of how they became dominant. EXAMPLE: where (geographically) are the greatest numbers of humans found, and why?

KEY THEME #2 GOVERNMENT (or economic networks & exchanges) – these are the ways people have exchanged ideas or goods, sometimes over great distances, and how networks built to help these exchanges exist (and are used) to this day. EXAMPLE: in order to make trades for goods of different values, money was created. This had several benefits for humans.

KEY THEME #3 USES & ABUSES OF POWER – a complex matter of interactions, the topic raises important questions like; Has power always been a part of the human role or did it evolve? Why are the differences so large? How do the powerful keep power? Why do the weak allow power over them? Do people always abuse power? EXAMPLE: in the modern world, why do 310 million Americans follow the orders of a handful of leaders?

KEY THEME #4 SOCIAL STRUCTURE – early hunter-gatherers were mobile with little ability for storing or having possessions. Intangibles like family, knowledge, and rituals were more important. The Neolithic Age created a need to store items of increased value. Coupled with the advent of power, questions of how a few are able to gather an abundance of items (while many struggle to survive) are raised. EXAMPLE: For every Willard Romney or Warren Buffet, how many poor are around? Why are the few more powerful?

KEY THEME #5 ART (expressing identity) – awareness of our identity is important. It helps us make our way through the world, identifying friends or enemies along the waywho have common likes and dislikes. EXAMPLE: when traveling overseas, the ability to identify people, signs, or groups that are able to provide safety or assistance to us makes the journey more comfortable.

KEY THEME #6 WRITING (things scientific, technological and environmental) – the changing ways in which humans have used the knowledge they share through collective learning to exploit their physical and natural surroundings for their benefit. EXAMPLE: Oil

KEY THEME #7 RELIGION (spiritual life and morality) – all human communities have had ideas of a spiritual realm and rules for right and wrong. Different communities have thought about those things in an astonishing variety of ways. EXAMPLE : Monotheism vs polytheism, and the roles of women.
