Select a single pivotal moment in the psychological or moral development of the protagonist of a bildungsroman. Choose a novel or play in which a character must contend with some aspect of the past, either personal or societal. Select a novel or play and, focusing on one symbol, write an essay analyzing how that symbol functions in the work Your table partner hands you 3 quotes that they say they are thinking about using in their essay. How do you decide that it’s better than the evidence you were thinking about? How do you decide you wouldn’t use those quotes?

Find the young Henry parts in your section (12, 17, 19, 22, 26, 45, 50, 67, 72) What single moments are there in your section that demonstrate Henry’s beginning psychological (mind; mental & emotional) state? Where does it start to change? What single moments are there in your section that demonstrate Henry’s beginning moral (right/wrong; good/bad) state? Where does it start to change?

Find the old Henry section in your section (3, 8, 34, 37, 41, 61, 65) What elements of his personal past is he struggling to deal with? What elements of society’s past is he struggling to deal with?

Symbol analysis Select a novel or play and, focusing on one symbol, write an essay analyzing how that symbol functions in the work. Skim through your section. What concrete objects are most obvious, or seem to have a level of importance surrounding them when mentioned? How does Henry describe the object? What is the purpose or function of the object? How does it work in Henry’s mind and memories, in the plot, or the story as a whole?
