Basis for Our Work Group consensus was to use the behavioral health manual developed by a consortium of PACE programs and presented at the 2013 NPA annual conference * The task force agreed that the existing manual is very comprehensive and is already in use at several PACE programs and that it could be the basis for the work of the task force. * Center for Elder Independence, Hopkins ElderPlus, Institute on Aging/On Lok, Pittsburgh Care Partnership/Community Life, Providence ElderPlace The project to develop this series of instructional modules to encourage integration of behavioral health into PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) programs began as a California Health Improvement Project that was expanded for all PACE. With the help of behavioral health experts in PACE programs from across the nation, modules were developed to address the major concerns in behavioral health.

Steps of Our Process Task Force members volunteered to review specific chapters of the existing BH manual Material included PowerPoint slides and training notes. Topics for additional chapters were discussed and volunteers assigned. Decision made eventually to drop the train-the-trainer chapter idea.

How to Use the Manual Each module is intended as a stand-alone one-hour presentation The modules are intended for all staff working at your PACE Center. The Medication module is intended for nurses; however it is a great review for providers in your PACE Center. Each module is intended as a stand-alone one-hour presentation. However if you are planning on a series of presentations, the Introduction and Motivational Interviewing modules may be best presented early on in the series. The modules are intended for all staff working at your PACE Center. It is challenging to provide education to such a mixed group with diverse educational backgrounds and abilities. Encouraging interaction between staff members and using others with expertise to provide examples will enhance the presentations. PowerPoint Presentation with Notes the content of the presentation can be seen by viewing the PowerPoint as “notes” pages can be printed as a guide for you during the presentation “Example” in the notes, this is a cue to you to insert an example from your participants. Have these prepared ahead of time Handouts on the key points that are provided are likely more than enough take–home information.

Steps of Our Process (2) First round of reviewing & editing – Alicia English offered to oversee this as chapters were completed. She had been involved in the creation of the original manual and had good insight of the product. New Chapters – developed and submitted First Draft – submitted to NPA for final editing including standardizing the PowerPoint slides Summer Conference – original plan to present the first final draft
11
Steps of Our Process (3) Because work on individual chapters took longer than anticipated, the plan to send the entire manual out to the task force for a final review and feedback was abandoned. Alicia English took on this task. Final draft – sent to NPA for final editing Finished Product – link to the manual is on the NPA website.
12
Next Steps The Task Force recommends that a process be established for regular review and updates of the manual – to be discussed and determined.
