The Appendicular Skeleton
Limbs (appendages) Pectoral girdle Pelvic girdle 126 Bones
3
The Appendicular Skeleton
4
The Pectoral (Shoulder) Girdle
Composed of two bones Clavicle – collarbone Scapula – shoulder blade These bones allow the upper limb to have exceptionally free movement
5
Bones of the Shoulder Girdle
6
Bones of the Shoulder Girdle
7
Scapula (shoulder blade)
Glenoid cavity- creates a place for the head of the humerus to fit (socket) 3 borders- Superior, vertebral (medial), axillary (lateral) Spine is a large ridge on posterior side, provides for large area of muscle attachment Acromion process- acromioclavicular joint (A-C joint) Corocoid process- helps in stabilizing the A-C joint
8
Bones of the Upper Limb The arm is formed by a single bone Humerus
9
Humerus Greater tubercle Lesser tubercle Head of humerus
Olecranon fossa Epicondyles Condyles
10
Bones of the Upper Limb The forearm has two bones Ulna Radius
11
Ulna Olecranon process: funny bone; point of elbow
Styloid process: site of muscle attachment
12
Radius Radial tuberosity: site of attachment for the bicep
Ulnar notch: point of articulation with the Ulna Styloid process
13
Bones of the Upper Limb The hand Carpals (8) – wrist
Metacarpals (5) – palm Phalanges (14) – fingers
