1 Mitosis (Cell Division) Notes
Mitosis – When a cell and nucleus divide to make 2 identical cells and nuclei Parent Cell Daughter Cells Chromosome number is the same in each new nucleus as the parent cell (23 pairs in humans) Mitosis occurs in body cells during growth, repair, and asexual reproduction.

2 4 Phases of Mitosis 1. Prophase -Chromosomes appear

3 2. Metaphase - Chromosomes line up in the middle

4 3. Anaphase - Chromosomes are pulled apart towards opposite ends.

5 4. Telophase - Chromosomes bundle up into 2 new nuclei

6 Cell Cycle Just like all organisms have a life cycle, when cells divide it is called the cell cycle. Mitosis is only a short part of the cell cycle Interphase takes most of the time in the cycle Def: The cell’s chromosomes, and organelles double and the cell grows in size Cytokinesis – After the nucleus divides (mitosis), the cytoplasm must also separate into two new cells

7 Special Types of Mitosis (Asexual Reproduction)
Regeneration – Some animals use mitosis to regrow body parts that have been lost. Lizard’s tails, sea star limbs, deer antlers Fission – Basic type of asexual reproduction used by prokaryotic cells (bacteria) Budding – Type of asexual reproduction where the identical offspring forms on the side of the parent Cacti, Hydra, Sea Jelly, Sea Anemone
