OLD BUSINESS Faculty unionization
The Bureau of Mediation Services (BMS) conducted hearings in May, 2016 to determine whether or not Unit 11 employees (i.e., T.S./LEC) can be combined with Unit 8 employees (i.e., T/TT/Contract and Adjunct Faculty). Unit 11 employees would then be eligible to vote on faculty unionization along with Unit 8 employees. The BMS ruled in favor of SEIU and said Unit 11 can be combined with Unit 8. On January 24, the MN Court of Appeals notified the University that they will hear the appeal regarding the BMS ruling. SEIU argued that the unionization vote should occur before the appeal is heard.
