2. Whaling One of the earliest businesses in the early 1800’s
A port officer counted 60 whales in the river Derwent between July and September 1804
In 1834 there were seven whaling ships operating out of Hobart
Total export of whale oil that year was valued at 45,573 pounds

3. PENITENTIARY CHAPEL
Situated on the corner of Brisbane & Campbell streets. Built in the early 1830’s by Architect & Engineer John Lee Archer. Originally designed as a chapel for the male convicts included 36 solitary confinement cells.. Later became the Hobart Gaol. In 1859 part of chapel converted into two criminal courts execution yard and gallows attached.

4. THEATRE ROYAL Oldest continually operating theatre in Australia.
It opened in 1837.
It was designed by Archer.
In 1984 there was a fire

5. Parliament House in 1869

Has been the meeting place of the Government since 1841.

8. HENRY JONES IXL JAM FACTORY
Henry Jones started work at George Peacock’s
jam factory, in 1874 at the age of 12.
In 1891 Henry Jones & Co business was established in Hobart.
Became an entrepreneur spanning five continents with jam, fruit, timber, mining and shipping.
Today it is now the Henry Jones Art Hotel

10. CASCADE BREWERY Oldest continuously operating brewery, in South Hobart
Was established in 1824 by ex-convict Peter Degraves
Produces Tasmanian beers and soft drinks
Runs Tours

11. Richmond bridge

Australia’s oldest sandstone arch bridge, spanning the Coal River
Still in continuous use
25 km north of Hobart

13. TRAMS
Established in 1893
First electric tramway in the southern hemisphere
8 different lines
It’s fleet of double decker trams were the only such trams in Australia
In 1960 closed tramways in favour of trolley buses, In 1968 replaced by buses

14. Battery point In the 1830’s many houses were built at Arthur’s Circus
These were built for officers of the town
Some houses built in early 1900’s, ranged from cottages to Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian styled homes
Many made of sandstone and Colonial architecture
