1 The “Natural” Logger - American Beaver

2 HOW DO WE GET THE WOOD WE NEED WHERE WE NEED IT?

3 To Harvest: to gather a crop,
catch or remove for use. Harvesting the Forest: The process of getting the trees from the ‘stump to mill’ can be broken down into simple steps:

4 Severing or cutting the tree from the stump is referred to as FELLING.
Historically this was carried out with an axe or hand saw.

5 The development of the chainsaw increased the efficiency and speed for a single person to fell a tree

6 Once the tree has been cut, it must be PROCESSED.
This involves taking the branches off (‘delimbing’), topping the tree, and then cutting the stem into logs (‘bucking’). Gil Wojciech, Polish Forest Research Institute, Bugwood.org

7 Now all of this - from stump to log - can be done by one man + one machine in just minutes!
John Deere 1270E JD <1 min

8 Pulling the tree from the forest area (or ‘stump’) to a landing is referred to as EXTRACTION. When the trees are pulled out of the forest it is called skidding; when they are carried out on a trailer it is called forwarding. n USDA Forest Service - Region 2 - Rocky Mountain Region Archive, USDA Forest Service, Bugwood.org

9 Before trains and trucks, logs were moved long distances on the rivers.

10 Loading/Transporting: Once the trees have been processed into logs, a loader will help sort, stack and then load logs onto trucks or trains. Donald F. Rogers, North Carolina Division of Forest Resources, Bugwood.org Ronald F. Billings, Texas Forest Service, Bugwood.org

11 If a forest has burned, is all of the lumber lost?
“Dead Standing Timber Harvesting and Reclamation” Payette NF 5+ min.

12 wood products in our world.
The end of the harvest – but the beginning of wood products in our world.
