FACS provides students with the opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors essential to successful life management.
Courses focus on food, nutrition and wellness, fashion design and clothing management, parenting/child development, employability and career exploration as well as home décor and personal living [environment].

Prerequisite: None
Basic food preparation and baking skills/techniques (lecture, demonstration and participation in food prep) Learn about:
ingredients
cooking methods
terminology equipment
safety and sanitation procedures
Students will also explore careers in the food service industry.

Course focus:
human development and healthy life choices
adolescence - looks, thinks, feels, and acts
developing strengths
recognizing weaknesses
improving personal relationships
Career opportunities include social work, psychology, education and recreation fields.

Fashion Design and Apparel Construction* (FCS 112) ( Formerly Clothing, Textiles and Design)

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: None Students will learn basic machine sewing techniques
Course includes:
cultural and historic aspects of clothing, textiles
clothing design and redesign
selection, construction and evaluation of ready-made garments
Exploring fashion design, retail management and other career opportunities.
***When taken in conjunction with Housing and Environment, these two courses will fulfill the graduation requirement in the Arts.

Course includes:
design theory
personal needs, comfort and safety, energy needs
selection and use of appliances, furnishings and equipment
In addition, career opportunities in housing and design are identified and explored.
When taken in conjunction with Clothing, Textiles and Design these two courses will fulfill the graduation requirement in the Arts.

9. Culinary Techniques (FCS 110)
½ Credit Weight 3
Grades: 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: None
Course explores food production including:
preparation of eggs, batters, potatoes, vegetables, fish, meats, salads and dressings
practice of cooking methods such as frying, roasting, broiling, griddle work, poaching and sautéing,
a basic understanding of use and care of kitchen equipment
Careers requiring culinary skills will be explored.

10. International and Regional Foods (FCS 111)
½ Credit Weight 3
Grades: 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: None
Students gain a greater understanding of:
food patterns of various countries and regions
student’s production and presentation of complete menus and techniques as they apply to European and Asian cuisines.
Students will also evaluate foods and explore career opportunities in the food, hospitality and travel industries.

11. Child Development (FCS 101) (EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION PROGRAM)

Prerequisite: None
Course studies:
the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social development of the toddler, preschool, school-aged child
children with special needs
daily care, guidance, discipline, caregiver, and social responsibilities are studied and skills are practiced in a variety of situations.
In January, students will be responsible for operating a playgroup/preschool experience for 3 and 4 year old children within the community.
