3 VRI/VRS Phone Interviews
Why do some employers ask for phone interviews in the first place? 1. In order to quickly eliminate you as a candidate Interview candidates that are out of town or aren’t able to attend an in person interview for whatever reason Know whether you can take the call when it comes if it is a cold call. Schedule a time to do the interview if you cannot do it immediately Take the phone interview as SERIOUSLY as the in-person interview You will need to work even HARDER to sell yourself in the phone interview Prepare for the “mental game” of the phone interview

4 VRI/VRS Phone Interviews
Do not use your cell phone for the video interview. Provide good, uninterrupted power and internet access if you must use your phone. Tips for working with the video interpreter Turn off any additional features like call waiting Put pets outside or in a room so they are not heard during the call Ensure that the background, lighting and your clothing are set up so the interpreter can see you clearly Join call early to prep interpreter that you will be in a job interview conversation Provide interpreter with any special terminology/signs needed Send a thank you letter in WRITING after the interview

7 Asking & Responding questions in interviews
Can you tell me a little about yourself? Don’t give your complete employment or personal history Give a pitch that is compelling and show that you are right fight for the job Start off with 2-3 specific accomplishments or experiences that you want the interviewer to know about. Then wrap up how that experience had prepared you for this potential job position How did you hear about the position? A perfect opportunity to stand out and show your passion for and connection to the company If you got this interview with contact, share the person’s name. Then, share why you are excited about this potential job position If you discovered about this position through job board or events, mention it. Then, explain why this potential job caught your interest

8 Asking & Responding questions in interviews
What do you know about the company? Interviewers knows everybody can read company’s history and mission statement off from the company’s website Interviewer wants to know how you can support company’s goals and mission statement Use some keywords from the goals and mission statement. (i.e., I play a major role in an organization at building the workforce that funds America) – HCO’s goal – “Your partner in building the workforce that funds America” Then explain how this role impact the organization’s goal Where do you see yourself in five years? Be realistic about your career goals Explain how this position will help you to reach your 5 years goal If you are uncertain what will happen in the future, that’s OK. Just mention this job position will help mold your experience in making 5 years goal decision

9 Asking & Responding questions in interviews
Why should we hire you? If you got asked with this question, you are in luck! Explain how you can deliver great results Explain how you can fit in with the team and culture Prove the interviewer that you are best candidate for the job Do you have any questions? (Source: to-answer-them) When a potential employer asks if you have any questions, it’s a fantastic opportunity to build rapport with them, express your enthusiasm for the role, show that you’ve done your research – and just as importantly – a chance for you to make sure the role is a good fit for you There’s no perfect number of questions to ask, but it’s good to have at least 2 or 3 ready

10 Asking & Responding questions in interviews
Do you have any questions? Some questions you might like to ask include: “What are the main challenges facing the organization right now?” “Where do you see the organization going in the next five years?” “Can you tell me about the team of people I’ll be working with?” The key is to be genuine with your questions and not to sound too rehearsed Also, be sure that you aren’t asking really obvious questions that show you haven’t done your research. For example, getting to the end of an interview and then asking: “So, who are your main clients?” is not a good idea!

11 How to Respond to wrong questions
Source ( How old were they when they were diagnosed with a hearing loss? What type of school did you go to? (Mainstream, School for the Deaf etc) Did/do you use an FM system? Did you lip-read? Do you find it difficult? How do Hearing people react when they find out your Deaf? Do you interact with the hearing world or the Deaf world more? Why? How do you feel about cochlear implants? If interviewer asks any kind of questions like above, politely remind the interviewer that you are here for a job interview, not to interview about the disability. When hired, you can remind the interviewer that you will work with Human Resources in getting accommodations for what I require for everyday function. Steer back to the job interview, show your strengths and share the interviewer with communication barrier breakdown that you accomplished.
