2  TOPIC : BILGE PUMP USE/DIAGRAM WITH THE OTHER PUMP

3 Introduction  Water is used in variety of ways in a ship's engine room. It is obvious that some part of this water is lost either thorough leakages or operational faults.

5  A bilge is the lowest space of the ship. It is the area where two sides of the ship meet.

6  These bilge compartments are also known as bilge wells, where all the bilge water gets accumulated.

7 What is bilge water?  Bilge water is not exactly water but a mixture of variety of substances. Its a mixture of fresh water, sea water, oil, sludge, chemicals and various other fluids.

8 So where does all these substances come from?  Sea water and fresh water can find its way to the bilge wells due to leakage in the pipe lines, leaky pump and valve glands, from machinery, propulsion system, over flowing of tanks and even due to accidental spills. All these substances get accumulated in the bilge wells and the mixture formed is known as bilge water.

12 Ballast Pump  Is also called ballast tank pump or ballast water pump. It is a pump for transferring or discharging water ballast. Ballast pump is usually in a pump room on board the ships or vessels. Together with the tank, pipe, valves, it is composited of the ballast system.

14 BALLASTING & de-ballasting  Ballasting or de-ballasting is a process by which sea water is taken in and out of the ship when the ship is at the port or at the sea. The sea water carried by the ship is known as ballast water.  Ballast water is sea water carried by a vessel in its ballast tanks to ensure its trim, stability and structural integrity. Ballast tanks are constructed in ships with piping system and high capacity ballast pumps to carry out the operation.

15 The simple ballast arrangement shown may alternatively use a general service pump with a common manifold for bilge pumping operations

16 Ballasting a tank by pumping Working Principle  Before operations physically check that all valves on the suction and discharge manifolds of the fire and bilge and general service pump are shut.

17  Open the sea inlet valves. Open the sea suction valve at the suction manifold and close the ballast suction valve. Open the ballast line on the discharge side of the general service pump. Open the valve for the tank to be filled. Start the pump. Ballast water will now pump from the sea inlet to the selected ballast tank.

19 De-ballasting by pumping out (Working Principle)  Check that all valves on the suction and discharge manifolds of the fire, bilge and general service pump are shut. Open the valve on the tank to be emptied. Check that the shipside overboard discharge valve for the general service pump is open. On the general service pump, open the ballast suction valve.  Start general service pump and open the overboard discharge. The tank will start to empty. Take soundings at regular intervals. When the tank is empty close all valves.

20  The transfer of ballast from sea and river water and discharging on the other side of the world has led to the unintended importation of pests and exotic species.

23 Fire pump for Ships machinery spaces Fire protection on ships is provided by detection and fire-fighting equipment together with structural features which are intended to contain an outbreak of fire and the employment when required of non- combustible materials to prevent its spread.

24 Fire pump  Is a part of a fire sprinkler system’s water supply and powered by electric, diesel or steam. The pump intake is either connected to the public underground water supply piping, or a static water source, i.e. tank, sea water.
