Macromolecules Today’s Do Now is a riddle (don’t give it away if you figure it out!) John’s mother has four children. Her first three daughters are named April, May, and June. What is her fourth child’s name? 2nd : What happened in 1961 that won’t happen again until 6009?
2
Today’s Plan, in 3 Steps Get a little background information about macromolecules. Work with your group to investigate one example of a macromolecule. Communicate your findings to a new group.
3
Macromolecules A macromolecule is a large organic molecule found in living cells. There are just four types: Protein Nucleic Acids Carbohydrates Lipids
4
Protein You “are” proteins.
Muscle, skin, and other body tissues are all mostly protein. Proteins do the work of a cell, from breaking down food to controlling reproduction
5
Nucleic Acid Nucleic acid, such as DNA, is used to store and process information. It contains all of the instructions an organism needs
6
Carbohydrates Carbohydrates store energy for living things.
They are also most of the mass of plants. Wood is almost 100% carbohydrates.
7
Lipids Lipids are fats, oils and waxes.
Their job in cells is to be the cell membrane. Also, they are for long-term energy storage.
