3 Brainstorming 1. What are the four ancient civilized nations? China, ancient Egypt, ancient Babylon and ancient India.

wonders of the world? Do you know what are they? They are Pyramids, the Hanging Gardens, the Statue of Zeus, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Colossus of Rhodes, the Lighthouse of Alexandria, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus King.

9 Lead in The topics we are going to deal with are quite fascinating but some seem to be far from our life. Look at the following pictures and tell us what they are.

10 The Statue of Zeus Reputed to be 40 feet high, the statue has been lost without a trace, except for reproductions on coins.

15 The Taj Mahal (India) The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal on the bank of the river Yamuna as a tomb for his wife.

16 Located at Agra in Uttar Pradesh, the Taj Mahal is one of the most splendid masterpieces of architecture in the world, the one and only one of its kind across the world. It was Emperor Shah Jehan who ordered the building of the Taj Mahal, in honor of his beloved wife, Arjumand Banu who was later known as Mumtaz Mahal, which means,

the Distinguished of the Palace. The ultimate realization of Emperor Shah Jahan’s dream. One of the wonders of the world. It was built in years (1631 to 1653) by 20,000 workmen. The building is made of white marble. A beautiful garden surrounds the Taj Mahal. In front of the main entrance to the building there is Taj Mahal in the reflection from the water.

The city of Pompeii was found in the 8th century BC. In 89 BC, the Romans took over Pompeii. It then became a rich and busy city. Near the city was a volcano. On 24 August AD 79, the volcano erupted and lava, ash and rocks poured out of it onto the surrounding countryside. Many people were buried alive, and so was the city.

21 The Potala Palace (China)
Potala Palace is located on “Red Hill” in Lhasa. It was originally built in the 640’s, during the reign of King Songtsan Gampo.

22 The 13-story palace stands 117 meters high and covers an area of 130,000 square meters. It is divided into two sections, the Red Palace and the White Palace. It was used as the residence of the Dalai Lamas since the 7th century, as well as the religious and political centre of old Tibet.

23 Today, the palace remains a sacred shrine for thousands of Tibetan Buddhists, and has also become a state museum containing many precious works of art.

31 As you know people from ancient civilizations built many magnificent structures. Some of them have disappeared, while others remain today. Do you think it is important to protect objects from the past? Why or why not ? Do you have any suggestions on how to protect it?
