Structural Insulated Panels Commercial Applications A Foundation for CCM Products

Structural Insulated Panels … What Are They? The anatomy of a Premier SIP… A composite of three materials:  OSB (Oriented Strand Board)  InsulFoam EPS (Expanded Polystyrene)  Laminating Adhesive 2

SIPS Features & Benefits  Building envelopes15X tighter than conventional framing (Oak Ridge Nat’l Labs)  Prefabricated panels (up to 8’X24’)  Faster Framing = Faster Completion (Installed in days not weeks)  Reduced framing labor (30-50%)  Reduced jobsite waste/dump fees  Reduced operating costs – up to 60% savings on heating and cooling (ORNL)  Stronger – Greater loads than standard stick framing  Straighter – Engineered predictable product  Greener – Energy savings, environmentally responsible  LEED NC (up to 30 pts)  99% recyclable  Energy efficient product qualifies for tax credits & incentives

The Science Behind Saving with Premier SIPS  8’X24’ panels: Fewer gaps and seams reduce air infiltration  Reduction in studs dramatically reduces thermal bridging  Solid EPS core eliminates air movement in walls/roofs (convective looping)  Reduced air movement = superior whole wall efficiency over 2x6 R19 construction

SIPS in Commercial Applications  Wood based construction  Used for the total envelope  or just roofs  or just walls  Commercial applications National Chain Restaurants Multi-Family, Senior Living, Lodging Strip Malls Government (Post Offices, Schools, etc.) Churches & Non-Profit “SIPS are so significant to airtight construction that Energy Star has waived the requirement for blower door tests for SIPS construction across the U.S.” - U.S. EPA

When do you use SIPs? If your client wants energy efficiency  use Premier SIPs for framing the envelope MMany studies are available to substantiate the energy efficiency of SIPs building envelopes 10

When do you use SIPs? If your Contractor needs labor savings  use Premier SIPs for framing the envelope  SIPs can save up to 55% on labor 11

When do you use SIPs? If the project timeline would benefit from a shortened rough-in time  use Premier SIPs for framing the envelope 12

When do you use SIPs? Architectural reasons to use SIPs:  Design Considerations  Energy Savings  LEED-NC (30 pts)  California Green (CalGreen) Building Standards  Sustainable Building Requirements 13

Where do you use SIPs? Typically, the exterior envelope is where Premier SIPs are used: - Insulated floors - Exterior Walls - Roofs 14

Panel Sizes  Premier SIPs panels can be manufactured in sizes from  2’x8’  Up to 8’x24’ 15

Panel Thicknesses / R-Value  There are five nominal panel thicknesses  The core dimensions match dimensional 2x’s: 3 ½”, 5 ½” 7 ¼”, 9 ¼”, 11 ¼” 16

Panel Thicknesses / R-Value  The 3 ½” and 5 ½” panels are typically used for walls  The 7 ¼”, 9 ¼” & 11 ¼” panels are typically used for floors and roofs 17

Splines - Panel Connectors Premier SIPs has three basic types of splines or panel connectors  Listed in order of cost effectiveness they are: 1.The block or surface spline (Type S panel) 2.The I-Joist spline (Type I Panel) 3.The lumber spline (Type L Panel) 18

Splines - Panel Connectors The block or surface spline (Type S Panel)  Either a 3” wide piece of OSB or  A 3” wide mini panel  This spline type does not increase the panels span capability  Used with all width panels 19

Splines - Panel Connectors The I-Joist spline (Type I Panel)  Less thermal bridging than with solid lumber splines  Adds strength to the panels  Maximum spacing of 4’ oc  This spline limits the maximum width of panel to 4’ 20

Splines - Panel Connectors The lumber spline (Type L Panel)  Double 2x’s or solid 3” min. width lumber  LVL may be used  Maximum spacing is 4’ oc  Adds strength to the panels both axially and transverse 21

Wall Panels  Most walls are 5 ½” core panels because of minimum R-19 insulation requirements  Wall panel heights and widths are customized for each project  Both skins of the wall panel must be in bearing at the bottom of the panel 22

Wall Panel Details  The top and bottom of the wall panel will have 2x plating  The top of the wall may have a cap plate for additional bearing capacity  Wall panels will have 2x plating at the corners or changes in direction along with long screw fasteners 23

Wall Panel Details  Wall panels will have 1.5” diameter electrical chases Horizontally Vertically  Top and bottom plates are drilled during installation to access the vertical electrical chases 24

Roof Panels  Most roofs are 9 ¼ ” core panels because of minimum R-38 insulation requirements  No Attic - Vaulted ceilings are common  Minimum 1 ½ ” req’d for bearing of bottom skin 25

Roof Panel Details  Common overhang details: Square cut roof panel Plumb cut roof panel Ladder framing  Reduced overhang details 26

Air Tightness  Premier SIPs create a very tight envelope. Mastic at joints 0.05 ACH for SIPs 1 ACH for tight stick ACH = air changes per hour  Require mechanical air exchange system  Be careful with fire places and kitchen fans Depressurize the building 27

Air Tightness Premier SIP Tape intended to address model code requirement for a vapor retarder  Applied at panel joints  Premier SIPs Documents that provide guidance: Technical Bulletins #28 and #32 Premier SIPs Detail PBS-013 28

Thermal Barriers The major model codes require thermal plastics to be covered with an approved thermal barrier: ½” Gypsum Or an approved material  This requirement applies to Premier SIPs 29

Hourly Assemblies Premier SIPs has multiple hourly rated fire assemblies  UL P517  UL P822  UL P839  UL U524  Type L Wall Panel - E119 assembly tested by Omega Point Labs 30
