1
The Wright Brothers and the Airplane
By Dorothy Madronich and Shelby Pisani
2
Overview Airplanes Who came up with the first idea of the airplane
Who was the first to invent the airplane What they were used for How the airplane changed over time
3
Inspiration to fly Birds, kites, and gliders.
Many people studied birds and kites to get an idea of how to fly. People would attach wings to themselves and flap them and try to fly but it failed. Inspiration to fly
4
Hot air balloon First successful air flight
Only problem was you can not control where you go During civil war they were used by armies to look at enemy troops. They are a balloon heated with hot air because hot air rises Hot air balloon
5
First Plane Otto Lilitenthal was the first to come up with the idea of lift function He thought the bird wings were separate and distinct Tried to mimic birds wing craft Played a big part in the emerging field and profiting the glider.
6
Wright Brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright
Had 3 others siblings they were the sons of Bishop Milton and Susan, Katharine Milton. There father was editor of the news paper and had a job in the ministry so they moved often.
7
Wilbur Wright Went to Central High School and studied Greek and Math.
Played hockey in High School and home bond for 4 years. Helped his brother make the printing press Wilbur Wright
8
Orville Wright Designed the printing press.
Published a weekly and monthly newspaper. Had a bike shop with his brother and had there own bike brand and self oiling wheel hub.
9
Wright Brothers The loved to tinker and learned from there mom who always fixed up things around the house. There mom would to pay them to fix things around the house.
10
Getting involved Before building there own plane they improved the glider. They made a rudder and flaps so the polite could control the direction and height of the plane
11
Wright Brothers Plane In 1889 the brothers developed a simple system to wrap the wings of the biplane which made the glider. In 1900 and 1902 there test had lack of control which brought them back to the drawing board
12
Composition Samuel Langley Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution.
He made a powered air craft Last two attempts failed which took him out of the competition.
13
First Flight The Wright Brothers failed again when there propellers broke. Orville resoled the problem by using spring steel to make a new set of shafts. On December 17, 1903 the Wright Brothers made there first flight that lasted 12 seconds and went 120feet They made four other flights and the longest went feet
14
Wright Brothers Success
They were the first people to fly a plane with someone in it. The Franklin Institute became the first scientific Institution to recognize the Wright Brothers achievement in 1914 Orville Wright expected the Cresson metal for scientific achievement In 1928 the first plane they flew was put in National Air museum
15
Telling their story At first not many people believed them even though they got it on picture The first person they told was there dad and he very so proud. His words were “ Neither could he have mastered the problem alone. As inseparable twins they are inseparable to each other”
16
Assembly Line Is the arrangement of machines, tools and workers to assembly a product. The assembly line revolutionized the history of the airplane.
17
World Wars In World War 1 aircraft were used as weapons.
Following the war aircraft technology continued to develop Air craft played a primary part in World War II and all other wars
18
World Wars Wars were filled with blimps, planes, and tethered balloons. By the end of the World Wars plane became a symbol of fear. Soon all countries in the world had there little air force.
19
World Wars Changed the dramatics of the airplane’s assembly line forever. The assembly line went from a small compound of American to the largest in the world in just a few years. Eventually producing over 3,000 air craft during world War 2. In roughly 6000 planes were being built on assembly lines in the U.S. By 1943 over two million people worked in the industry, growing the revenue.
