5 Role of Project Manager
Lead team; Schedule and lead project team meetings Oversee team project plan execution Assist project engineers as needed Resolve any team roadblocks Raise team issues to Space SIG Board or Arusha as needed Mentor ONE JEDI Padawan (selected with the JEDI Council) JEDI = Jumpstart to Engineering Design and Invention = Space SIG outreach project Assign engineering project tasks to Padawan Provide college, career, intern, and employment advice as needed; groom Padawan to work for your agency/company

Serve as technical participant on project team Analysis, CAD, SME, research, sketchwork, design, etc. Attend project team meetings Complete project tasks Assist other team members as needed Raise any roadblocks / issues to Project Manager Mentor ONE JEDI Padawan (selected with the JEDI Council) Assign engineering project tasks to Padawan Provide college, career, intern, and employment advice as needed; groom Padawan to work for your agency/company

19% of Black 4th graders in US proficient in math in 2015 13% of Black 8th graders in US proficient in math in 2015 Only 5.5% of Black 8th graders in 2005 completed Calculus five years later 1.1% of US Black college freshmen enrolled in engineering programs in 2010 3.4% of US engineering bachelors degrees awarded to African Americans in 2014 3620 awarded to African Americans in 2015

9 Impact of JEDI NSBE 2025 National goal to increase number of US Black engineering bachelor degrees to 10,000 annually by 2025 Top NSBE priority, but current efforts are not enough These students will be in 9th – 11th grades (4-6 year undergrad matriculation) this fall; eligible for intern/co-op programs summer 2020 – spring 2025 Each project team can help NSBE 2025 just by doing your job; no additional work required

Each JEDI Padawan establishes one Enclave Each Enclave establishes (on average) three Initiate Clusters Each Initiate Cluster establishes (on average) three Trainee Circles Each Trainee Circle conducts Youngling outreach with (on average) three institutions

5 Enclaves = 25+ undergraduates (min. 5 students/Enclave) 15 Initiate Clusters = 75+ high school students (min. 5 students/cluster) 45 Trainee Circles = 225+ middle school students (min. 5 students/circle) 135 Youngling Institutions = elementary school students (min. 50 students/outreach event) This is the impact of ONE 5-person Space SIG team, each member contributing 2-5 hours work/week JEDI is a force multiplier, but JEDI cannot multiply x 0

13 Impact of JEDI Houston Space Professionals only responsible for two Space SIG project teams Arusha Rover Cockpit Arusha Rover Deployable Maintenance Workstation National Space SIG goal is 40 teams At 40 teams, 5 Enclaves/team = 200 enclaves 5+ undergraduates / Enclave = undergraduates Assume on average graduating seniors each year Also means 270,000 Younglings impacted annually This becomes a very tangible contribution to NSBE 2025

We do what is important…is this important? Is the 2-5 Commitment Viable? (If not, propose alternative now) 0-2 hours/week: meetings (or speak at an event) 0-2 hours/week: independent work 15 min/day: communication (progress update, tell others about NSBE, help others join)

Four of are direct concern to you One is optional, but could affect your employment Three are necessary for your project and occur twice per year Note: there is no Arusha role (currently) at any of the following NSBE Conferences: Annual Convention, PDC, NLC, RLC, FRC, SEEK

Held even-numbered years AIAA-style technical conference 2018 ASC in Washington DC metro area Minimum expectations for each project team Author one or more Arusha technical papers Supply one or more Arusha exhibit items (trade show) Represent project to attending companies and agencies Look for collaborative opportunities

Held odd-numbered years, MLK weekend Space SIG technical project co-location Always Denver, CO Minimum expectations for each project team Achieve pre-identified work milestones Collaborate with other Arusha teams Collaborate with non-Arusha Space SIG projects Represent project to attending companies and agencies Pursue collaborations with host university and local companies

Not directly related to Arusha (for now) Annual legislative visit Targets House and Senate Appropriations and Authorizations committees Promotes NASA budget and space exploration Organized by Space Exploration Alliance – visiting as private citizens, NOT as NASA employees Cannot use any federal resources

Self Determination – not subject to Employer/NSBE funding Personal value Your NSBE role is (or should be) relevant and beneficial to your NASA career You should leverage your NSBE role as part of your career development plan Your selected project should be of personal interest Your project outreach should be personally important Risk if dependent on others for travel Employer unable to finance travel = personal loss of goals NSBE unable to finance travel = personal loss of goals Leverage your salary and go on your own dime

Tax Deduction When itemizing deductions can deduct NSBE expenses if NOT reimbursed Form 1040 Schedule A Line 21 – Unreimbursed Employee Expenses Travel (airfare, hotel, registration, rental car) Meals (x 50% if local, x 80% if non-local) National and local dues May also need to file form 2106 or 2106ez The test is “ordinary and necessary expenses attributable to your job” Ordinary – common and accepted in your field of trade, business, or profession Necessary – helpful and appropriate for your business (does not have to be required to be necessary) Space SIG activities are “ordinary and necessary”

26 NSBE Travel Stipend Can only occur when NSBE has funding that covers travel Corporate sponsorship Chapter or Conference level Often only enough for conference expenses, rarely enables travel Entirely dependent on diligence of Finance or Partnerships Chair NSBE Chapter Relief Funds Primarily used for Annual Convention (NEB discretion) Rarely covers full expense

29 Employer Travel Funding
Each company addresses travel differently Often differences within individual companies or agencies In most cases have to declare travel intent early (some cases a year in advance) Conference websites may have sample letters to give to supervisor to encourage travel support Space SIG conferences are predictable Even numbered years: SPMM in winter, ASC in summer Odd numbered years: STS in winter, SPMM in summer NEVER request US government funding for Space Blitz (illegal to use federal funds)

Neither project team has a Project Plan currently This is large part of why neither team has accomplished anything in months Anything x 0 = 0 Work that is known is leftover work not accomplished at the 2017 NSBE Space Technology Session Only way to regain direction is to take part in SPMM
