Background Born 1480 in Portugal– Died 1521; parents died at12
Spent youth as a page in Portugal’s royal court Learned many skills like how to read the stars, how to wield a sword, and how to ride a horse At 25, Magellan joined a Portuguese fleet of ships captured by Francisco de Almeida Had many successes at sea

Voyage 5 ships from Sanlứcar on Sept. 20, 1519
Reached the Pacific Ocean more than 1 year after he set sail The 3 month voyage across the ocean caused many of his sailors to become ill with scurvy. 29 died On March 6th, 1521, Magellan reached the island of Guam, part of the modern Marianas Islands On April 27, 1521, the Natives on Mactan, an island in the Philippines, Magellan was hit by a spear and hacked to death.

Purpose of Journey Wanted to discover a westward sea passage from Spain to the Moluccas, a collection of tiny islands Also wanted valuable spices like nutmeg, but did not live to see the Spice Islands He dreamed to find a route to the Spice Islands He wanted to lead the first expedition around the world He wanted to find a westward route to the Indies

Hardships & Challenges
For 38 days Magellan and his crew passed lands of fire, giant glaciers, and dense forests after their 3 month journey across the Pacific Crew got ill because of food shortage and dirty water. 29 died Most of his crew died because of sickness and scurvy He lost many men to war, starvation, and disease He wanted Natives and fought them but lost and was killed

Named the Pacific Ocean (means peaceful ocean) He was the first one to circumnavigate the world The Strait of Magellan was named after him He proved that the Spice Islands lay in in Spanish Waters sailed around the Cape of Good Hope and he sailed for the king of Spain at the age of 17

Other Notable Occurrences/Events
His crew moved on to the Spice Islands and later made it back by sailing around the tip of South Africa with only 10 men left. Even though he didn't live to the end of the trip Magellan is still considered the leader of the first circumnavigation around the world Food and water gave out and the crew had to eat rats, ox hides, and sawdust
