What is Metadata?
3
Purpose for Compiling Metadata
Data Documentation Data Browsing Data Transfer NO you need metadata before you can use the data. Even if you are the creator or collector of the data you would like to know key pieces of information. Without truly understanding why you need this information you will eventually find out, the hard way. Peanut allergy and you are innocently eating popcorn or french fries from a restaurant. How about plain M&Ms. Why aren’t my data points in the right place. Oh maybe because my state outline came from a world map or it is in a different projection. Hey look I found more data to use. Never mind it looks like they got this data from us and it is duplicate information. How did they get our data without us knowing about it. It wasn’t meant to be used at that scale, plus didn’t we update that last year.

5
Data Browsing To support search and advertising of a data set based on its extended properties To provide end-users of data sets with adequate information for proper use
6
Data Transfer Who should I contact to get a copy of this data set
Does it have a cost Will the data expire, is it the latest issue, when will it be updated Format of the data

When do I work on my metadata?
15
Why Standardize?
16
Why Standardize? Remember the FGDC CSDGM is a standard but it still does not tell you what to write. The quality of the content that is entered into all the fields gives value to your metadata. GIGO
17
Why Standardize? Metadata are notes to re-create the data set
Ask YOURSELF questions Question someone else’s data

What is this? The bright red fingers of the Rio Tinto, an acidic river in southwest Spain, are seen in this aerial photograph. NASA scientists have made use of this uninviting landscape in the Mars Analog Rio Tinto Experiment (MARTE) to develop drilling and sample handling technologies that may be used in future explorations of Mars. Field researchers have already found that the Rio Tinto is full of extremeophile microbes that can thrive in the harsh iron- and sulfur-laden waters that are hostile to many organisms. Spain's Rio Tinto is characterized by deep red water that is highly acidic (pH 1.7—2.5) and rich in heavy metals. The Rio Tinto holds a significant role in history as the birthplace of the Copper Age and Bronze Age.
