Nestinarstvo The ritual fire dancing on live coals – an ancient Bulgarian custom with Christian and pagan elements. Has its roots inThracian traditions, in their sun worship. Performed in several Bulgarian villages in Strandja Mountains near the Black Sea. Usually performed on the day of St. Constantine and St. Helena, the patrons of fire dancers.
39
Nestinarstvo Only fire dancers (nestinari) can do it - people dedicated to the mystery of the ritual. The dancers can be both men and women. The dance is accompanied by the beat of a drum and the sound of a bagpipe. It is believed that some of the dancers reach a religious state of trance while dancing. This explains why their feet don't get burnt and they don't feel pain.
