Mr. Martin sued went all way to supreme court. SC gave the land back to martin but VA refused to listen to Fed. Gov’t stated they didn’t have jurisdiction. But they did Outcome Supreme Court had authority to hear all appeals of state court decisions Made Federal Supreme Court final court of appeal

10 2. McCulloch vs. Maryland 1819 Story: Maryland tried to tax the 2nd national bank of USA, its was on their land Outcome: S.C. ruled that fed. gov’t could create a national bank (cuz implied powers/necessary & proper clause) S.C. ruled that fed. gov’t was supreme

11 3. Gibbons vs. Ogden story: NY tried to have a monopoly over steamboat traffic from the Hudson River to NJ. NY gave Ogden his license but Gibbons received his from the Fed. gov’t. 13 Examples of Foreign Nationalism
1. Florida added to the USA Signed Adams-Onis treaty 1819 Gave Florida to USA and defined the Louisiana territory boundaries

14 Between the U.S. and Spain
Adams-Onis Treaty (1819) Between the U.S. and Spain The Seminoles, an American Indian group in Florida often clashed with white settlers, who were upset because the Seminoles were providing a safe haven for runaway slaves General Andrew Jackson led a force into Florida to fight the Seminoles and seized Spanish forts. This showed that Spanish control of Florida was very weak and convinced Spain to give up their claim to Florida. What does the United States gain? FLORIDA
