Independent / Dependent
Clauses
2
Independent Clauses What are independent clauses?
They are by definition independent. They can survive out in the world by themselves. Examples of independent clauses: Jason studied in the rain for his grammar quiz. Meghan walked across the street. The Bachelor is a deplorable television show.

Dependent Clauses What are dependent clauses?
They do not represent a complete thought. They must be paired with another clause to survive. They often contain dependent marker words or Subordinating Conjunctions. Examples of a dependent clause: When Jason studied in the rain for his grammar quiz… As Meghan walked across the street… Because The Bachelor is a deplorable television show…

Subordinating Conjunctions
A Subordinating Conjunction (sometimes called a dependent marker or subordinator) comes at the beginning of a Dependent Clause and establishes the relationship between the dependent clause and the rest of the sentence. It also turns the clause into something that depends on the rest of the sentence for its meaning.
