The Product Design Process
1.Identify client, user, need, problem or opportunity 2.Design Brief Outline of the context, constraints and considerations 3. Design option criteria and product evaluation criteria Development of criteria to evaluate how well the design, planning and final product satisfies the design brief 4. Research Research into factors related to the design brief: materials and process investigations 5. Visualisations Concept sketches and drawings of whole or part of potential ideas to meet the requirements of the design brief 6. Design options (presentation drawings), selection and justication of preferred option A series of potential solutions evaluated to determine which best suits the requirements of the design brief 7. Working drawings and pattern drafting Drawings including technical drawings, showing product specications (i.e. sizes and construction methods) needed for production planning 8. Production plan Sequential plan and timeline, listing tools, equipment and machines with risk assessment and a materials list 9. Production Scale model, prototype and/or product and production record. Renements and modications may be made throughout production 10. Product evaluation Evaluation of prototype/product quality using product evaluation criteria. Recommend improvements 11. 1.Identify client, user, need, problem or opportunity
Things to think about: -Who -What -Why -When -How Problem: a question proposed for solution or discussion. (Dictionary.com) Need: a lack of something wanted or deemed Necessary. (Dictionary.com)

2.Design Brief Outline of the context,
Give scope and background of the client, the situation and the intended product. Constraint: Something that cannot be changed. (Example: The product must not exceed the specified dimensions.) Considerations: Aspects of the product that are considered by the designer and client. (Example: The Client is open to the use of a range of different materials.) A written statement that contains an outline of a situation, context, or problem/need. It focuses on the desired results related to the design of a product. The scenario is often a simplified version of a situation, which includes the hypothetical needs and wants of a client and/or an end user. 2.Design Brief 2.Design Brief Outline of the context, constraints and considerations

3. Design option criteria and product evaluation criteria
Development of criteria to evaluate how well the design, planning and final product satisfies the design brief Design Option Criteria: Development of criteria to assess the viability of each design option, based around the Design Brief. Product Evaluation Criteria: Criteria that are developed to assess the Planning, Production and final Product.

4. Research 4. Research Research into factors related
to the design brief: materials and process investigations Research: -Existing or similar designs -Aspects of the intended Design -Materials -Processes -Joinery techniques -Investigations of new and emerging processes -Outsourced processes Mood Board: A form of visual stimulus material, such as a large board covered with images.

5. Visualisations Concept sketches and
drawings of whole or part of potential ideas to meet the requirements of the design brief A series of sketches (pages) that demonstrate the designers ideas and visualizations developed from the Design Brief. Visualizations can be of the whole product or just parts/ components of the product. Example: Focusing just on table legs or a table top. Express all ideas as a designer through quick sketches to show your ideas.

6. Design options 6. Design options (presentation drawings), selection
and justication of preferred option A series of potential solutions evaluated to determine which best suits the requirements of the design brief Design Options: 4-6 different design options developed from the design brief and visualizations. These are solutions to the design problem. Presentation quality drawings Annotate and demonstrate features of each product. Use the evaluation criteria to assess and determine the most suitable design option.

7. Working drawings and pattern drafting
and pattern drafting Drawings including technical drawings, showing product specications (i.e. sizes and construction methods) needed for production planning Working drawings: Final presentation drawing of the chosen design. CAD or Google Sketch-up image. Orthogonal drawing of the final design Additional patterns or drawings highlighting detailed sections or construction methods. Remember, the folio is a demonstration of the full design process for the product you wish to fulfill.

Sequential plan and timeline, listing tools, equipment and machines with risk assessment and a materials list Production Planning: -The production plan should be sequenced (timeline, Gantt Chart, sequence plan. Week by week or period by period) -Machine and equipment risk assessments. -Material cutting list.

9. Production 9. Production Scale model, prototype and/or
product and production record. Renements and modications may be made throughout production Production: -The fun part!!!!! -Demonstration of the safe use of machinery. -The completion of the desired product or prototype. -Journal of production (period by period, including issues, concerns,, etc. -A list of modifications you made to the design. Remember: You will always make changes and modifications as your design evolves.

Evaluation of prototype/product quality using product evaluation criteria. Recommend improvements Product Evaluation: Final evaluation of the product and the quality. Recommendation of any improvements that could be made in the future. A physical evaluation can also be conducted. (how well does the product perform?)

11. Production planning and process evaluation
Evaluation of planning and the efficiency and effectiveness of production processes Production Planning and Process Evaluation: -Evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of the production process -Evaluating the planning stages of the production process surrounding your product. -Using the testing and checking methods developed from the evaluation criteria.
