Tandem Bike Storage Proposal
Original Concept Development: Team wanted to create a storage system that could easily load the tandem bikes into and out of the trailer. The initial idea was to suspend the tandem bikes above one another at a height low enough to fit under the mezzanine and in the trailer. Improves Load and Unload Time Decreases Square Footage During Week 3 the team took measurements of both the trailer and the tandem bikes It was determined that the geometry of the bikes prevents the bikes from entering the trailer while stacked on top of each other.

New Concept Development: With the decision to cancel the design and construction of the Tilt N’ Store from the project, the team wanted to find new ways to easily save space within the facility. The design of the tandem bike rack was focused on as a replacement. However, the team focused on a tandem bike storage device that would only be used within the facility. Reasons why the tandem bikes were the equipment chosen: Together they account for a square footage of approximately 60ft2 (Could create more space for the future). Bikes are longer and present a larger tripping hazard. The team had already gathered useful measurements on the bikes. Potential use of vertical space. At 70lbs, each bike is relatively lighter across its length than the small tricycles This means lifting one end at a time is not as straining. Also a larger pivot length.

Proposed Design: Vertical Side-by-Side Bike Storage Two Notable Design Changes: Each Bike will be loaded in a different direction to cut down on the footprint Device will be loaded and unloaded outside garage door This eliminates the need for any for additional space around the structure to unload bikes (frees up more space inside facility) Additional Benefits: System should be relatively cheap and quick to design/construct Utilize pulleys already at facility to improve mechanical advantage (Addition of a winch can eliminate pulling action) Device can be moved based on seasonal requirements Utilizes vertical space Design could be leveraged to Large Recumbent Bike
