Independent Reading (IR)
Exposure to various genres of literature Opportunity to apply learned reading strategies & skills (identify elements of plot, compose central idea statements, identify figurative language, respond to reading, Notice & Note) IR sessions in class & reading at home Written IR log (weekly grade/ reinforces skills & strategies learned during lessons related to class novel) Assortment of Book Projects & Assignments

Word Study Wordly Wise! Lists are provided every other Monday. Quizzes are given the following Wednesday. Printed blog entries are due the Friday after each even-numbered quiz. Vocabulary development activities are used to enforce comprehension. Focus on: Definitions, Synonyms, Antonyms, Analogies, Application/Context Quizlet

Learning Stations Learning Stations take place every Thursday for both periods. Students are in groups and rotate through 4 stations at approximately 23 minutes each. Learning Stations may vary, but generally focus on book discussion, word study, shared reading, independent reading, grammar, Ready CC, writing or project completion.

How You Can Help… Create a quiet work area at home.
Encourage your child to read every day. Encourage your child to recall & utilize learned strategies and skills related to reading, writing & vocab. Please proofread work by pointing out mistakes, but not fixing them; encourage “read alouds”. Encourage them to SELF-ADVOCATE as much as possible. Donations of supplies and tissues are always very much appreciated!
