Comets (and small bodies, in general) supply crucial clues about the planet's origins.
We have two distinct types of data:
The structure of reservoirs give insight into the dynamical evolution.
For example, the Kuiper belt and Scattered Disk:
We also have information about chemical abundances.
For example: which also relates to cometary orbits
But to relate this to nebula locations requires the understanding of reservoirs' origins.
