1 Preparation of the Body
Intermediate PE Preparation of the Body Lesson 8 Tuesday 20th October

2 Mid – Block Test a) Choose one aspect of fitness, describe in detail the importance of this aspect in relation to your performance in an activity from your course.

3 Answer The aspect of fitness I am choosing is cardio-respiratory endurance (CRE). CRE is the ability to keep the muscles supplied with oxygen for a prolonged period of time. High levels of CRE are important in my role as a midfield player in hockey for a number of reasons. Firstly I must work at a high level of intensity for the duration of a 70 minute game and high levels of CRE will allow this. Secondly, I need to provide support in attack and in defence for the duration of the game, this involves sprinting forwards to support in the attack and then sprinting back to support with defence as the game progresses. I must have high levels of CRE to do this repeatedly throughout the game. I also need high levels of CRE to ensure that I maintain a high level of skill for the duration of the game. High levels of CRE help prevent the onset of fatigue for longer and as a result my level of skill remains high allowing me to dribble past players to create chances towards the end of a game.

4 Give a definition of the aspect of fitness you are talking about
Mistakes One aspect of fitness! Some of you mentioned one TYPE of fitness and then talked about all the aspects in that type (know the difference between TYPE and ASPECT) Give a definition of the aspect of fitness you are talking about

5 Mistakes It asks you to talk about YOUR performance not just a HOCKEY PLAYER. You must refer to your performance as a midfield player (imagine that is what you are!) 4. “CRE allows me to last the full duration of the game, without CRE I couldn’t last the duration of a game” Why not?! Don’t use this sentence! 5. Give 3 or 4 specific reasons why that aspect of fitness is important.

6 b) Describe, in detail, how you gathered information on the aspect of fitness described in part (a) before setting up your training programme (4).

7 Answer You must name and describe the fitness tests you used.
CRE – multi-stage fitness test AND match analysis schedule. Describe step by step exactly how they are carried out. Give a diagram.

8 Some of you just named the test and didn’t actually describe it.
Mistakes Some of you just named the test and didn’t actually describe it. No-one described both the multi-stage fitness test and the match analysis schedule. If you describe both there is far more for you to talk about in the next question. 3. Some of you missed vital parts of the description out e.g. “the bleeps get progressively faster”.

9 C) Describe your results and explain what this information told you about your fitness (3).

10 Answer For the multi-stage fitness test I got a score of When I looked at the VO2max table this told me I had a VO2max of I compared this with normative data and it showed that I have poor levels of CRE. This was backed up by the results of my match analysis schedule which can be seen below:

11 Answer Time (mins) Standing Still Walking Jogging Mid-Pace Sprinting
0-10    10-20   20-30   30-40 40-50 50-60  60-70

12 Answer It can be seen from the match analysis schedule that I was performing lots of high intensity sprints etc at the start of the game but as the game progressed I was working at far lower intensities with very few sprints and far more walks as I obviously did not have a high enough level of CRE to maintain high intensity for the duration of the game.

13 d) What affect does this have on your overall performance? (4)

14 Answer As my levels of CRE are poor I find it very difficult to keep up with the pace of the game. At the start of a game I can cope alright and can make some sprints forwards to create an overload in attack. I can also sprint back to make crucial tackles and mark my player. As the game progresses though I find it really hard to keep up with the player I should be marking. As a result she is able to make a big impact on the game. She can drive forward with the ball and I feel too tired to get back and make a tackle. She can also make runs forward to create an overload and I find it too hard to keep up with her.

15 Answer I also find it difficult to support my team as we attack as I can’t keep up with play and need to stop lots to get my breath back. I am skilful at the start of the game but seem to make a lot of mistakes as the game progresses and particularly in the last half of the game. I don’t have the energy to dribble past players in the way I can at the start.

16 d) Describe, in detail, the first training session that you carried out to develop this aspect of fitness (5)

17 A single training session
This should include: A warm up (3 parts) The CRE session Skills practices Small sided games A cool down
