Operational Scenario: Victoria – Bushfire at Mount Feathertop 2013 – 37 hikers in the path of danger; cell phones the only channel of communication ■ 3 L-B SMS Alerts ■ Localised 4km radius, including the local town ■ 1,843 recipient devices ■ All 37 hikers located and evacuated safely by helicopter. Only LBS campaign was initiated, no service address based (national park) 1,843 successful LBS Emergency Alert messages sent 8km diameter First LBS SMS message sent was “…CFA WARNING TO HIKERS ON MT FEATHERTOP. FIRE 3KM NE of bottom of NW Spur, impacting on Bungalow Trk move to a safer place, DON'T use Bungalow Trk…” Second LBS SMS message sent was “…CFA WARNING:Hikers in Mt Feathertop & Mt Hotham areas, fire near Harrietville is moving in a SE direction towards Mt Hotham. Consider moving to a safer location…” Third LBS SMS message sent was “…CFA WARNING Hikers in Mt Feathertop & Mt Hotham areas, fire near Harrietville moving in SE direction to Mt Hotham.
