Grading rubric—explain dependent and independent variables and units
Use a graphs the students are already familiar with. Here I chose a global warming graph, to be unbiased. 
In my class, after walking through this graph with the rubric, I put up another graph that they are also familiar with and ask them to figure out the communicating data rubric with their group. After 6-8 minutes I have a group present it to the class.
