Definition of Nationalism
A feeling that people have of being loyal to and proud of their country often with the belief that it is better and more important than other countries

How important was the role of alliances in leading to the outbreak of World War 1?

France wanted the industrially rich region of Alsace- Lorraine back from Germany.
France felt confident in challenging Germany now that they had British and Russian support. They also greatly wanted revenge from the war of 1871. Tension was building between the European powers over remaining neutral countries which could be colonised e.g. Germany and France squabbling over control of Morocco. Russia became over confident now that it had an alliance with Britain and France and started to make plans for war with Austria. Britain felt threatened by the growth of the German navy and saw it as a challenge to British naval dominance. German industry had overtaken Britain and was the second largest world economy after the USA. Germany felt threatened by the rise of the French army (0.7 million in 1900 to 0.9 million in 1914) as well as the Russian army (0.8 million in 1914). Germany felt threatened by the Triple entente. In particular sharing borders with France and Russia. Britain felt challenged by Germany’s desire for an empire similar to Britain’s global empire
