Feeding Relationships in a Community
2
Food Chain Food Web Energy Pyramids Cycles of Matter
3
Food Chains A food chain shows the transfer of energy through a community. Example: Grass Grasshopper Robin Bacteria
4
Each food chain has at least one…
Producer Consumer Decomposer
5
Producers Organisms in a community that make their own food through photosynthesis. Also known as photosynthetic organisms Examples: Green Plants Algae
6
Consumers Organisms in the community that eat other organisms.
There are several types of consumers: Herbivores Carnivores Omnivores Scavengers Decomposers
7
Herbivores Consumers that eat only plants. Examples:
Also called primary consumers Examples: Deer Rabbits Grasshoppers Squirrels
8
Carnivore Consumers whose diet consist mostly of other animals.
Also called secondary consumers Examples: Coyote Owls Hawks
9
Omnivore Organism who eat both plants and animals. Examples: Raccoon
Fox Humans
10
Scavengers Eats something that is already dead Example: vulture
11
Decomposers Organisms that get that get their food from breaking down dead matter. Decomposers return nutrients (raw materials) back to the soil. Examples: Fungus (mushrooms) Bacteria
12
Check for Understanding:
Use the information in the table on the next slide and identify each animal as a carnivore, omnivore or an herbivore. Elephant: _________________________ Tiger: ____________________________ Lynx: ____________________________ Coyote: __________________________
13
Animal Length of Life in the wild Diet Range Elephant About 70 years Roots, leaves, and grasses Asia, Africa Tiger About 20 years Antelope and other animals Asia Lynx About 10 years Deer, rodents and other small animals Europe, Asia, North America Coyote 5 to 6 years Grasses, grains, and small animals North America
14
Check for Understanding:
Use the information in the table on the next slide and identify each animal as a carnivore, omnivore or an herbivore. Elephant: Herbivore Tiger: Carnivore Lynx: Carnivore Coyote: Omnivore
15
Food Web Shows the many food relationships in a community.
16
Energy Pyramid This is a model that shows the amount of energy available at each feeding level in an ecosystem. The producers at the bottom of the pyramid have the most energy AND largest number of organisms. Animals gain only a small amount of energy from the food they eat.
17
Check for Understanding:
Look at the food web. Suppose a disease caused the population of mice to decrease. What other organisms would be affected by this change? _____________________ How might their populations change? __________________________________________________

Cycling Matter Through an Ecosystem
Water Cycle Nitrogen Cycle Carbon Cycle
24
Water Cycle Cycle where water evaporates
Travels into the air and becomes part of a cloud (condensation) Falls down to earth as precipitation Then evaporates again. This repeats again and again in a never-ending cycle.
