1 Accommodations for Students with Disabilities in Dual Enrollment Classes Jill Anderson – CCP Advocate

2 Is this a high school student, or a college student?
College Credit Plus Students with Disabilities - Who is Responsible to Approve Accommodations? It helps if you think about it this way - Is this a high school student, or a college student? College Credit Plus students are college students, who happen to be still in high school. They may be high school sophomores for every other period of their school day, but when they enter the CCP classroom, they have all of the rights and responsibilities of any college student on any campus in America. It further complicates this dual role, when these high school aged college students have disabilities.

3 Access Vs. Success What’s the Difference?
Secondary Postsecondary High School College IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990) Section 504, Rehabilitation Act of 1973 On the left, you will see the two laws that govern approval and provision of accommodations in the K-12 setting. On the right, you see the college laws. Though Section 504 appears under both, the colleges use Subpart E, and the High Schools use Subpart D. High schools are charged with ensuring that all students have the opportunity to graduate from high school. Accommodations are often approved to help that high school student be successful. Colleges want students to be successful, but our laws charge us with the responsibility to ensure that students with disabilities have access to their education, just as their non-disabled peers do. IDEA is about SUCCESS ADA is about ACCESS

4 High School vs. College-level Accommodations
Extended time to turn in assignments All assignments are due on the dates indicated in the syllabus Instructor repeats/ rephrases directions during class Student must ask questions for clarification, either in person or via Study guides Only if available to entire class Access to notes during testing Adjusted class schedule/ shortened day Students registered with DS have priority registration, to schedule classes appropriately Modifying tests/ homework assignments Students must complete same coursework, and take the same tests as non-disabled peers Now, think about that Access vs. Success information as you look at the two columns of accommodations.

5 Who Provides CC+ Accommodations?
It depends…..on where the class is located! If the class is in the high school, the high school will typically provide. CSCC DS is available to help support where needed (audio books, etc.) If the class is on a Columbus State campus, Columbus State will provide. Regardless of class location, students must register with Disability Services in order to receive accommodations for their classes.

6 Placement Testing In order for a CCP student to use accommodations on the placement tests, Disability Services must receive a copy of the student’s documentation, and a completed Placement Testing Accommodation Form at least a week before the scheduled testing day. Here at Columbus State, our office (Disability Services) collaborates with College Testing Services to ensure that documentation has been received/reviewed for any students flagged as needing accommodations on a high school’s placement test roster. Until documentation is received and reviewed by a CSCC DS Advocate, the student is not eligible to receive access to accommodations on their placement test(s). This is extremely important to remember, because if a CC+ student receives access to an accommodation they received in high school that may not be appropriate at the post-secondary level, that student’s test scores have now been invalidated.

7 Placement Test Accommodation Request Form
Testing Date: Testing Location: Student Name: Date of Birth: High School (currently attending): Cougar ID: Student (username) Student Personal Student Phone #: Intervention Specialist Name & Contact Info: Accommodations Requested: Here is an example of the form to be completed and mailed in – show the form on the website.

8 Registering with Disability Services
Documentation of disability is sent to DS (with the Placement Test Accommodation Request form, if the student needs to take placement tests with accommodations). Submitted information is reviewed by a DS CCP Advocate. The student meets with Advocate for intake appointment After the intake, the student is officially registered and approved for services and accommodations The student receives a Letter of Accommodation (usually 1 to 3 business days after the Intake appointment) The student presents the Letter of Accommodation to his Instructor, and discusses services and accommodations with the Instructor

9 Sample Letter of Accommodation
To reiterate: Students must provide Instructors with a copy of their Letter of Accommodation. This serves as proof of registration with Disability Services, and outlines the student’s approved accommodations.
