1 JAMAICA : KINGSTON & AROUND
Kingston (about inhabitants) is Jamaica’s cultural and economic heart. Downtown, centered around ‘Parade’, is home to historic buildings and has a shabby charm. Uptown (New Kingston) is more modern (and a bit safer). Ghettoes, plagued by gang violence and criminality, are numerous (Trench Town – birthplace of reggae music -, Tivoli, August Town …). Nearby is Port Royal, the pirate capital of the Carribean destroyed by an earthquake in 1692 and Spanish Town which was Jamaica’s capital during 300 years.
