4 Set ground rules - quick Only 1 person on the field

5 Don’t take a chance on player safety
Decision Process When an injury happens: Identify – there is an injury - stay alert Decide – how serious it is STOP immediately – if serious Play on – if not serious Don’t take a chance on player safety

6 Serious Injury

7 Serious Injury GO to injured player ASSESS the situation quickly
STOP play immediately GO to injured player ASSESS the situation quickly TALK to the player if possible BRING on the trainer ASAP GIVE time & space to deal with player ASK if they need anything

8 Serious Injury continued
Player is not to be treated on the field if can be safely removed from field Be aware of the rest of the players If ambulance is required, be prepared to communicate with: Parents Coach’s Other players

9 Serious Injury continued
Keep a record including: # of player (s) Time of incident Who else was involved What happened Complete a SIR and submit to league

10 Law 5 Only return once ball is in play
If trainer comes on the field, player must leave the field – some exceptions Only return once ball is in play from the touchline if ball is in play OR any boundary line if ball is out of play With referee approval OR Approval from designate – AR or 4th Pg 45 of LOTG

11 Slightly injured

12 Low Risk TAKE a minute to assess the situation
If team has possession, stop play If opponent has possession, play the advantage GO to the player – show empathy TALK to the player – ask questions If required, bring on the trainer REMEMBER – player must leave the field

13 Do not have to leave the field to be treated
Exceptions Goalkeeper injured 2 players on the same team injured GK/opponent collision – injury on both teams Do not have to leave the field to be treated

14 Do not have to leave the field to be treated
Exceptions A player is injured as a result of a physical offence for which the opponent is cautioned or sent off if the assessment/treatment can be done quickly. 20 – 25 seconds delay only Do not have to leave the field to be treated

16 Added Time Assessment and/or treatment of injured players
Allowance is made by the referee in each ½ for all time lost in that ½ through: Assessment and/or treatment of injured players

17 DISCIPLINE If referee has decided to caution or send off a player who is injured and has to leave the field of play for treatment, the card must be shown before the player leaves.

18 BLOOD Be aware of potential situations:
Any player who is bleeding must leave the field Be aware of potential situations: slide tackles, mid air collisions, GK/striker Player may not return until referee is satisfied the bleeding has stopped Player is not permitted to wear anything with blood on it.

19 Liability of Match Officials
A referee or other match official is not help liable for: Any kind of injury suffered by a player, official or spectator Pg 51
