Tone – writer’s attitude toward a subject, character, audience (ex: serious, amused, sarcastic, objective, etc.). irony – something turns out different from what is expected. Allusion – reference to a well-known person, event, or place from history, music, art, or another literary work. Style – distinctive way a writer uses language, characterized by elements of diction, syntax, imagery, and organization . symbol – any object, animal, event, person, or place that represents itself and stands for something else on a figurative level. Springboard – page 112 Student volunteers read aloud “Introducing the Strategy: SIFT” – underline/highlight the key idea(s) Review briefly some of what was underlined In same groups as yesterday, fill in the SIFT chart for 15 minutes. Be sure that everyone in your group gets the answer. Then groups will be assigned certain literary elements when we go over it. Review answers – be sure to write the answers.

Springboard – page 114 Student volunteers read aloud “Determining Theme,” “A Theme is Not,” and “A Theme Is” – underline/highlight the key idea(s) Review briefly some of what was underlined Do “Check Your Understanding” as a class!

Springboard – page 114 (Narrative Writing Prompt) – ½ page to 1 full page on paper! – 30 min. (no talking until all students done – keep yourself busy if done) Write your own scene in which Madame Sofronie cuts Della’s hair or Jim sells his watch to buy her combs. Use description and details to create a setting and situation. Set up the conflict, and introduce any new characters and their perspectives for the reader. Use dialogue to create a vivid picture of characters and to develop tension regarding the conflict. Provide a smooth transition to the next part of the story. Use a consistent point of view (1st, 3rd limited, 3rd omniscient) and verb tense (past or present). When done, get a mark from me and staple on page 100 of your Springboard.

11. Anaphora – repetition of the same word or group of words at the beginnings of two or more clauses or lines. 12. Juxtaposition – arrangement of 2 or more things for comparison. 13. Flashback – Interruption or transition to a time before the current events in a narrative. 14. Denotation – precise meaning of a word (dictionary definition). 15. Rhetorical Appeals – emotional, ethical & logical arguments to persuade an audience to agree w/ writer (speaker). 19. Logos – rhetorical appeal to reason or logic. 20. Strategize – to plan the actions one will take to complete a task. Inference – conclusion about ideas not directly stated. Transcript – written copy or record of a conversation between two or more people. Claim – thesis statement describing the position the writer is taking on an issue.
