1 Detection of XIST RNA in interphase cells from a normal male, a normal female, and a 49,XXXXX female by RNA fluorescence in situ hybridization. Male cells do not express XIST RNA. Female cells express XIST from the inactive X chromosome, and XIST transcripts remain associated with the Barr body complex. Cells from the 49,XXXXX female have four inactive X chromosomes; each expresses XIST and forms a distinct XIST RNA/Barr body complex.
