Do Now: Describe the propaganda poster below. Why do you think Stalin wanted a poster like this produced? Why is it not surprising that a totalitarian nation would produce art like this?

3 I. The Great Purge In 1934, Stalin turned against other members of his own Communist Party. He wanted to eliminate people who he thought might threaten his power. Thousands of Communists who had helped lead the 1917 Revolution were put on trial and executed for “crimes against the Soviet state.”

4 Concluding Question Were Stalin’s totalitarian policies necessary to turn the Soviet Union into a great power? Why or why not?
