Haitian art isn’t just found on the walls of galleries ; it weaves thru the streets and roads. Painted ‘taptaps’ (local buses or minibuses) and trucks are one of Haiti’s highlights. Many owners add extra bumpers and mirrors and repaint the whole vehicle with both sacred and profane scenes! Slogans (sometimes quite funny) and Biblical verses typically decorate the vehicle, either in French or Creole languages.
Taptap conversion isn’t cheap ; some owners expend more than US$1,000 for that ; minimum artistics standards are even regulated by the National Union of Taptap Artisans !
