Lesson Aims: - True/False/NG Questions - Strategies - Examiner’s tricks - Reading practice (Timed)
2
Practice # 1 Try the given reading passage and try the True, False and Not Given questions. Answers: 1. True 2. False 3. True 4. Not Given 5. Not Given
3
Strategies for T/F/NG Read the question carefully to make sure you fully understand what it is saying. Scan the text to find where the answer is using key words from the question When you find where the answer is, read the text carefully to identify if you think it is T, F or NG. The questions will probably use synonyms rather than the words in the text. DO NOT WORD MATCH
4
Look out for controlling words such as “only”, “all’, “never” etc
Look out for controlling words such as “only”, “all’, “never” etc. For example, if the fact in the question says 'some' and the fact in the text says 'all', then it is F. Only use the information in the passage to lead you to the correct answer; do not bring your own understanding or your opinion into the decision on what the answer should be If you can't find the answer within 2 minutes, then automatically circle NG because the information is probably not there, so don't waste time looking for it.
5
LEARN THIS RULE: If the statement clearly appears in the text – it is True If the text clearly says the opposite of the statement – it is False If you didn’t find the statement to be either True or False – it is Not Given
6
For example: “Smoking is dangerous and can lead to cancer”
1) If the text clearly says that “smoking is dangerous and leads to cancer” then the answer is T. 2) If the text says that “No research showed evidence that smoking is dangerous and leads to cancer” then the answer is F. 3) If the text says “The research included smokers of both genders of ages 30 to 45″ and nothing else about smoking – your answer is NG.
