5 Colonial Life Women were allowed to attend church, but could not vote. They were under the authority of their husbands. Young men were often apprenticed off to learn skills, while young women often worked in wealthy households.

Education became very important, with a law passed in New England ensuring that a school was to be built for every 50 families in an area. Most instruction was based on the Bible.

12 Harvard University In 1636, Harvard University becomes the first college in the colonies followed by William and Mary College in Harvard was a seminary.

13 Age of Enlightenment The Age of Enlightenment focused on knowledge, reason, and science to improve colonial life. Benjamin Franklin is the most well known American believer.
