Most people spend their whole lives discovering who they are Getting to know yourself is an important part of your journey During this journey you will try new ways of doing things You will look at things in different ways You will go down many paths and some will lead to careers You can discover your way by exploring and finding out who you are 1.01 Understand interests, attitudes, and values.

Self-Assessment Self-Assessment is a way to learn more about who you are. To discover who you are, you can use self-assessment tools in the form of: Checklists Questions Drawings Interest, attitude, and values inventories are self-assessment tools that will help you discover who you are. 1.01 Understand interests, attitudes, and values.

5 Discovering Your Interests
Interests are the ideas, subjects or activities a person enjoys. Your interests are your favorite activities. Ask yourself: How do I like to spend my free time? Ask yourself: What am I curious about? 7 Think About Your Favorite Things
How do you spend your time? What school subjects do you enjoy? What are your favorite things to do? What do you talk about with your friends? What kinds of books and magazines do you read? What kinds of TV show and movies do you watch? What do you daydream about? 1.01 Understand interests, attitudes, and values.

8 Make A List of Your Favorite Things
Use the notes page entitled “Who Am I?” to list 10 of your favorite things. Share with your partner 3 of your interests. Look at your interests Do you see any patterns? Things you enjoy doing may fall into categories or groups 1.01 Understand interests, attitudes, and values.

9 Interests Can Be Classified into 4 Categories:
People – describes activities involving people Data – describes activities involving intangible items such as numbers, information or knowledge Things – describes activities involving tangible things such as machines, tools, equipment, materials, products, plants, or animals Ideas – describes activities involving creativity 1.01 Understand interests, attitudes, and values.

Interest Inventories An Interest Inventory is a checklist that points to your strongest interests In Career Cruising you took an Interest Inventory called the “Career Matchmaker”. Interest Inventories match your interests to possible careers 1.01 Understand interests, attitudes, and values.

What is Attitude? Attitude is a general outlook on life. It is how you feel or react to a situation. A person with a positive attitude sees the good things and works to improve any negative things. A positive attitude makes life more enjoyable. What Are Values? Values give you direction. Values are what you believe is important. They are the beliefs and ideas you live by. Your values are an important part of who you are. Your values help you make all kinds of decisions from choosing friends to choosing careers. Values can guide you as you as you make important decisions. Types of Values Work values – the things about work that are important to you. Understanding your work values will help you select a career that suits you. Example: if you value helping people you may enjoy a careers as a social worker, teacher, nurse, etc. Economic values – how important money is to your happiness. 19 Where Do Values Come From?
You learn values from important people in your life Family members, teachers, religious leaders Culture or community may also influence your personal values 1.01 Understand interests, attitudes, and values.

20 Uncovering Your Values
People share many basic values. Many values are taught by example. If your parents or family members always make an effort to be truthful with you, you’ll probably be truthful, too. If you see your parents helping others, you’ll learn to help others also. 1.01 Understand interests, attitudes, and values.

Basic Values Relationships – Values being close to friends and family. Courage – Values overcoming fear to face problems. Responsibility – Values being dependable and trustworthy. Recognition – Values wanting to be respected and appreciated Compassion – Values caring for others.
