The British had to pay off large debt from the F&I War decide it’s time for the colonists to pay their fair share 1765 British Prime Minister Grenville suggests law (Act) to tax colonists known as the Stamp Act. required colonists to buy a stamp for every piece of paper they used: newspapers, wills, marriage licenses, death certificates, and even playing cards

Patriots took more violent action Mobs calling themselves the Sons of Liberty attacked tax collectors’ homes After months of protest, Parliament repealed, or canceled, the Stamp Act

What was the Quartering Act?
Colonists unhappy over another law passed by Parliament in 1765 – the Quartering Act. law ordered the colonists to provide British soldiers with quarters, or housing give them candles, food, beverages and other items of comfort NY colonists refused to approve funds for this British government reacted by refusing to let NY Assembly meet again until it agreed to obey the Quartering Act.
