6. Why should I learn this stuff?
You will earn your first of four English credits which are needed to graduate.
If you learn this stuff, peers and your parents will think you are very smart.
You will present yourself better to others (remember first impressions are important!).
It is so much fun that one day you might want to grow up and become an English teacher.

Once you leave Hammond High School, your free education is over. You will pay for any further training and education, so grab as much as you can while it is free!

What is literacy?
The ability to make meaning out of a particular symbol system.
Examples:
English: The dog wore a red hat.
Math: 25/5 + 2 – 3 = ?
Spanish: Mi cuarto es bonito.

Our desks are off limits (Black Hole). If you need something off it, just ask !
You will be in your seat with your materials when the bell rings for class to begin.
We dismiss the class.
No heads on desk or sleeping in class.

All completed work goes into the appropriate turn in drawer.
Check your folder to get make-up-work (only with an excused absence).
Your daily planner = your hall pass.
Leave the room in good condition; pick up after yourself.

15. Electronic Device Policy: For OUR Room
The teachers determine usage.
Unless stated, your device will be off.
We will let you know when it is appropriate to have out your device to use it.
If you have it out, and do not turn it off and put it away when asked, we will take your device.
If you refuse to give us your device, you will receive an office referral, and the front office will have your device. Your parents will need to come in to pick it up.

They are good listeners, yet they can not read minds.
