Gardening The most popular hobby of the British is gardening. Most English people love gardens above all, and this is probably one reason why so many people prefer to live in houses rather than in flats. In the suburbs you can see row after row of ordinary small houses. And each house is surrounded by lots of flowers. Many people who have no gardens of their own have patches of land. They spend much leisure time working among their flowers, trees and vegetables. The British take part in numerous flower shows and vegetable shows with very good prizes. Such shows are very popular in Britain. To many gardeners the process of growing the plants and taking care of them seems more important than the pleasure of looking at the flowers or the prospect of eating vegetables. In many places a competitive gardener’s desire is to grow the biggest cabbages or leeks or carrots. So this is the most favourite hobby of the British people.

English Proverbs An Englishman's house is his castle. East or West, home is best. There is no place like home. Every bird likes its own nest. Every dog is a lion at home. Dry bread at home is better than roast meat abroad. He has no home whose home is everywhere. Home is home though it be never so homely. The wider we roam, the welcome home.

English proverbs & Idiomatic Phrases
Men make houses, women make homes. A house is not a home. The house is a fine house when good folks are within. Grace your house, and not let that grace you. Owner should bring honor to the house, not the house to the owner. Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home. Curiosity is ill manners in another’s house. Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones. He that would be well needs not go from his own house. Far from home is near the harm. House divided against itself cannot stand When the house is open, the honest man sins.
